CTIY WALK
Traces of Nazi history – Questions for the present
20 Bezirk | 10 June and 27 September 2011
›So, what does this have to do with me, anyway?‹
The area around Wallensteinplatz is perhaps familiar to some. However, are the history and the stories of the persecution, expulsion and murder of Jewish people, and the stealing of their properties and possessions inscribed in the city's history? And what does that mean today, for contemporary life in a post-nazi migration society?
The occasion for this city walk was the unveiling of the expanded memorial Karajangasse. For this project, trafo.K invited experts, educators, teachers and students to take a closer look at the history of the secondary school Gymnasium Brigittenau, as the school was built on a site that had been a Gestapo prison during the Nazi era, and the surrounding area. Talks and interventions took place in public spaces, in which the students presented traces of the past of the school and its immediate surroundings, reflect on the continuities, and discuss the meaning of history for the present.
Workshops and talks were held with: Maria Ecker und Philipp Haydn (Projekt ›Hörspuren Brigittenau‹), Alois Kinast (Aktionsradius Wien), Bernhard Teuschl und Ayşegül Şeker (students), Miloš Stanišić und Mario Talaić (students), Katharina Morawek und Sheri Avraham (Plattform Geschichtspolitik), Radostina Patulova (theorist) sowie Emil Proksch und Artur Tsal-Tsalko (students), Renate Pražak (teacher and head of the memorial Karajangasse) and students of 6D, Angela Tiefenthaler (Verein Gedenkdienst), Renate Höllwart, Elke Smodics-Kuscher, Nora Sternfeld, Werner Prokop (Büro trafo.K)
